A Day at the Park - What to Pack on an Outdoors Day with Your Family
For a carefree family day outdoors in the park, preparation is key. Knowing what to bring along ahead of time can help ensure the outdoors day will be a memorable one.
Safety Basics
A first-aid kit should always be included when preparing for family outings. Secure valuables like wallets and cell phones in packs that you can hang from your neck or around your waist. For any day spent outdoors, even overcast days, protection against damage from the sun is essential. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of around 30 at least 20 minutes before setting out, and reapply every 2 hours.
Fashion Basics
Bring a daypack with a few articles of clothing, such as hats, clean socks and waterproof parkas, for any unforeseen changes in the weather. Encourage family members to dress in light layers of clothing that they can shed easily if the weather gets too hot. Suggest trousers over skirts. Do bring sunglasses, but put the expensive sets aside in favour of those that can stand some knocking about. Plan routes in advance for carefree motoring, and also include a plan "B" – what to do, who to call, where to meet – should you encounter unforeseen difficulties. Helmets are recommended.
