Go Eco-Friendly With Water-Saving Tips and Reusable Shopping Bags
We open up the paper and we read it. We turn on the television or the radio and we hear about it; it's the "go green" movement. What does green mean? We have been celebrating Earth day for many years but how many people think about the environment the other 364 days (365 days in a leap year)? If we go grocery shopping, we see reusable grocery bags but do we actually purchase them? It seems purchasing these reusable shopping bags would be an easy effort to go green. With that in mind, what else can be done with green in mind?
When you hear green, it actually means a variety of things and anything, be it object or activity, can make an impact on our environment. For instance, the water in our houses can be made green with some simple changes.
Whenever you clean your dishes or need to wash the countertops off, you run the water endlessly until you no longer need it. You waste water cleaning your dishes or kitchen this way. It may seem like a bit of an effort but shut off the faucet until you're ready to rinse the dishes or clean off your rag. When you waste water, you use about 60 percent more water than you really need to handle the task.
Many companies, in an effort to control how much water a person uses, are selling on-demand water faucets to be installed in homes. These devices were first created for public restrooms so that sinks would be unable to overflow should they be left on. Now you can find designer bathroom and kitchen faucets that will turn on when hands are near or touch the faucet. This means all you have to do to turn off the water is touch the faucet again or move away.
Newer faucets are installed with a flow restrictor valve that keeps the amount of water flowing down the drains "down". Flow restrictors will only allow three gallons of water to flow per minute. In fact, many states are passing laws to have these installed. Older made faucets can be retrofitted with an aerator/flow valve. Bear in mind that aerators do not save water but it gives the feeling that more water is flowing because more air is expanding the water stream volume. Some home kitchens have a bypass valve that allows pasta pots to fill up in a sensible amount of time.
You may not realize it but some studies have concluded that dishwashers actually use less water as well as soap than a person washing their hands. The reason for this is that when you wash dishes by hand you must turn on the water, you must let it warm up so that you can rinse off the dish, you need to wash it and rinse it off again. However, a dishwasher uses a predetermined amount of water and through a filtering process, it reuses the water from the wash cycle. For a small rinse cycle, fresh water is used.
